Tackling the energy crisis & fuel poverty together

The Litegreen Foundation CIC is a community interest company that is dedicated to fostering collaboration between the public, private, and voluntary sectors. Our goal is to promote fair access to impartial energy advice and ECO funding (Energy Company Obligation) while using local, socially responsible, and ethical supply chains that invest in our community. We believe in creating a sustainable future by working together to address the energy crisis and support the well-being of our community.

Our Beginnings

Let’s start with the context. We have among the worst and least efficient homes in western Europe and unfortunately, those who are most vulnerable often have to live in them. This can have serious and even deadly consequences, especially during the cold winter months when heating costs are high. The implications on health and wellbeing were really seen during the bracing cold of last winter at the height of a cost of living and energy crisis.

For the past 5 years, our sister company- Litegreen LTD has been providing expert impartial advice for local homes and businesses to optimise their existing energy consumption, helping them identify where savings can be made in energy usage, emissions, and costs. At the same time, they are passionate about social values and have invested time, skills, and profits into supporting local charities and community benefit initiatives.

This commitment to making a positive impact on our local community is what led to the creation of the Litegreen Foundation CIC, allowing the social value work to go one step further. As a community interest company, we can continue our shared mission of providing truly impartial energy advice to whole communities and support to those who need it most, while supporting other charitable initiatives & reinvesting profits generated these Government Grants back into social causes in the communities we live and work in.

ONLY 29%

To meet its climate targets, the UK has an ambition to retrofit all homes to EPC band C standard by 2035. But only 29% of homes today meet this standard.

OVER 25%

New figures from National Energy Action estimates that 2.5 million people aged over 60 will enter fuel poverty from April 2023 if there is no additional support. This is a 25% increase on the number in 2022.

£12.7 billion

The Local Government Association (LGA) projects that poorly insulated homes will leak £12.7 billion of energy over two years. This is bad news financially for individuals, families and the environment.

The local story

Our local area is facing some significant challenges, particularly in the realm of housing upgrades and improvements. In 2022, just before the planned energy price increases and the cost of living crisis, the UK Government provided a significant amount of social funding to support the improvement and upgrading of housing stock. However, the previous scheme fell short of national targets, and our region (Wales) was on track to spend only a fraction of the budget.

In addition to this, there is a severe shortage of qualified licensed specialists available to survey eligible homes, which has resulted in large companies from across the UK competing for the funding, particularly in rural areas where there is an automatic 25% uplift in funding and profits. This has created a difficult situation and confusion for homeowners around trust, as not everyone has the homeowners' best interest as a priority.

The Litegreen Foundation CIC is here to help people access this funding in a supportive and impartial way with no sales pitch and nothing to sell, with advice on all the available charities and support that's right for you, ensuring that you home and our community gets the support it needs.

Through the Litegreen Foundation CIC, our goal is to increase the availability of funding to create high-quality homes across Wales.

We are committed to bringing as much UK funding as possible to our local area and ensuring that our community benefits from the opportunities that are available. By doing so, we can help to improve the living conditions of people in our region and support a brighter, more sustainable future for everyone.

Key elements to our model

Create efficient homes.

We are dedicated to advancing the large-scale retrofitting of low-carbon, energy-efficient homes across Wales and the UK.

By leveraging our expertise in this area, as well as our partnerships with industry leaders and community organisations, we can help to bring about positive change on a national scale.

So whether you're a homeowner, a community group, or a business, we are here to support your efforts to reduce your carbon footprint and create a more sustainable future for all.

Social focus.

Our goal at Litegreen Foundation CIC is to promote collaboration between the voluntary sector and local, social, and ethical supply chains.

By fostering strong relationships between these groups, we can create a more cohesive and sustainable community, where everyone is working together to achieve a common goal.

Whether you're a community group looking to partner with local businesses or an ethical supplier seeking to support worthy causes, we are here to facilitate these connections and help make a positive impact on our local community.

Upskill communities.

Our mission is to provide comprehensive training and upskilling opportunities in energy, housing, commercial buildings, retrofitting, and funding to entire communities.

We believe that by equipping individuals and organizations with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in these areas, we can make a positive impact on our communities and create a brighter future for everyone.

Profit shares.

We are using profits generated from the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) to make homes more energy-efficient and putting them back into the communities we serve.

By doing so, we are creating opportunities for other community groups to generate unrestricted income, which can be used to support a wide range of causes.

Additionally, our approach to using ECO funds means that we can support people who may not qualify for energy efficiency measures but are still struggling to pay their energy bills. This could include providing energy top-ups or paying for measures that are not covered by the ECO scheme.

Overall, by reinvesting ECO profits back into our communities, we can help create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
